That excites me, makes me want to get out of this flat land and go trap the mountains. Those are really great looking cat places. Were they west or south slopes? I would hate to have to carry cages in there to trap, but I'm sure it would be worth it. I really enjoy trapping in high dessert areas more than this flat land.

He has several places that the cats should be standing in line, waiting to be caught. When you set on north slopes do you have problems with snow staying all winter and the cats moving away form them? I know that I have better luck with sets I made on west or south slopes in the mountains. Even here in the flat lands south or west sides of tree belts stay dryer and make setting less difficult than they do on the north sides. I think the cats prefer the south sides where they don't have to walk on snow all of the time, also there is more food for rodents to eat and more rodents for the cats to eat. lol

Last year we made some catches on North slopes . the snow was only 6 to 8 in in most places ,most cat travel s, or w slopes dryer there .I will try to post some more pic later. yes mink looks like a place for a snare , we will use the double door in that spot ,see how it all comes out.

When you get to the head of a canyon, I like to place the trap on the top of the rock ledge. When I have a point that sticks out making a long point, I like to set below the rock out cropping. I also check for tracks or scat. You can't go wrong when you set on tracks for cats. If they have been there once they will be back there again. Sometimes on the rock points you will find toilets on top of the point, it doesn't hurt to check up there. I guess they like the view when they are dropping a load. lol

Bill you can see that big pine right above that big rock there is a toilet under it. that is where we will set up or close to the tree . we will see this fall check for tracks like you said .

sixbits i would put the trap in the last pic were the tree's are grouped for the shade. the cats will work that area. Id almost bet there is a toilet there.

A good toilet is one of the best places you can make a set. I'm not sure why, but a lot of trappers can't find toilets. Even in the country I trap, the flat land, I still find a lot of toilets to trap. I probably catch at least 1/2 of my cats at toilet locations. You really have some great country to trap. The other thing where it is private and you can drive anywhere, you should do well.

I think one of the reasons the cats will make a toilet on top of a rock outcroppings, is they are using the rock to look for their next meal. While they are there they can see any danger that might be around them and they are in their comfort zone. Most toilets I find on ridges are under a large tree, sometimes it will be as much as 50 yards behind the rock outcropping. Even in this country a lone tree in the middle of nowhere, I always check for a toilet. Most cats want it to be quiet under their feet and they don't like to have anything in their faces. They like to hunt along open areas next to cover where rodents live. Where they can move along quietly and see well.

sixbits, you're killing me. I think you have too many good locations for one person. lol I don't even take a picture of some of my cat locations around here, because they are boring. Just flat two track roads, edges of alfalfa fields or edges along fence rows with good cattle trails.
