I can see with cages that would be a problem. They are a lot more expensive to have, take more room to haul, I'm sure glad we can use other traps in the areas I trap. If I had to go to them I would still trap, but not as much as I do now. I have several friends in Ks that mainly trap cats, they also catch some coons, skunks, and grinners, and they all use only cage traps. The don't want to mess with coyotes or anything else. They set the live traps in areas where they are feeding cattle everyday, so they check the traps whenever they are feeding each day. There isn't as much of rush getting to a cat in a cage as in a foot hold. They normally set their traps where they don't have problems with thieves.

Yancy has it figured out. He is a sharp trapper. When forced to only trapping with cages, a lot of trappers would have quit trapping, but some trappers just take it as a challenge and excel at doing it. My hat is off to all of you trappers that have had to change your trapping methods.

Do either of you trap the saddle where 2 ridges come together? Just wondering if you do how do set it. One trap in the middle/ 2 traps one on each side of the saddle/ 2 traps one in the top of each draw...How would you set them?

Bill probably has more knowledge on this than I do . I will try to give the best insight that I know .I always set the saddles ,I try to use 3 traps in these places 1 on each side and 1 in the middle .just what I think ,Bill should have a better idea he has alot more experience

It depends on the saddle. If there is a road going over it or an elk or cattle trail, that is the main places I would set. If there isn't a road I would use at least two or three sets. In the mountains, I prefer to gang setting traps. What I mean, if the area is good enough for a set, it is good enough for three or four sets. If a gray fox or a coyote comes along before the cat and gets caught, I still want a active trap to catch the cat. If I put in three different sets, I use three different baits and lures. Every animal has different taste, just like some of us like Burger King others would rather eat at Wendy's. I think that most animals are the same. I have had them walk by one set and get caught in the very next set, with different bait and lure. I only use one trap at each set everywhere I trap.

If you are thinking like a cat would think, you are on one side of the mountain and want to cross into the next drainage, the saddle is the best place to cross, unless you have rock rims around the tops of the saddle, then the cat would rather be up there where the food is.

Spend time looking for sign and remember cats don't leave much sign. Just one track or a dropping will tell you more than we can tell you. If the cat walked through there once, he or another one will go through there again. That is one reason some spots work year after year. The time you spend looking for sign, is always time well spent.

I agree Bill the cats will tell you where to set up .I learn alot from a fresh track in the snow . Some times I follow them for half mile just to see what they are doing where they are going .I try to bend down to look and see what the cat sees, learn alot this way
